Cleaner Clams (Mercenaria mercenaria)
These clams are similar in appearance to the typi
cal edible clams we all know and love, however they are much smaller and are fully reef tank safe. While burrowing through the tanks sand bed they allow oxygen to penetrate the sand thus aiding in the sand beds biological filtration processes. As filter feeders they remove bacteria, unicellular algae cells, and particulates from the water column.

This one inch long Emerald Green Crab is a good example of a typical clean up crew invertebrate.
Emerald Green Crabs (mithrax sculptus)

Turbo Snails
These large hardy snails have many common names, they are known as Turbo Snail, Mexican Turbo Snails, and Giant Mexican Turbo Snails. They can grow to over an inch across and are very good for controlling algae on your aquarium glass.
They really work extremely well at controlling algae problems. In fact they may eat all your algae, if they do then you may want to help them out by feeding them an algae based fish food flakes or Nori seafood sheets for vegetarian fish.
Astrea Snails (Astraea tecta or Astraea caelata)
These snails are similar to the above referenced Turbo Snails, and are often confused with them. The differenced between Astrea snails and Turbo snails is that Turbo snails are turban shaped and large while Astrea snails are less than half the size and cone shaped. Both are great algae eaters.
Additional saltwater clean up crew invertebrates to consider.
In addition to the above standard packages, you might also want to consider the following busy workers for your reef tank.
Arrow Crabs (Stenorhynchus seticornis)
These unusual crabs with long thin legs and an elongated spike on the top of their head sometimes eat the nuisance bristle worms that nibble on corals at nights. They also help to clean the tank by eating any leftover food.
Burrowing Starfish
These gray starfish are also known as sand sifting starfish or sand shifting stars. They clean and aerate the sand bed as they burrow through it feeding on detritus (aquarium dirt). Aeration of the sand bed allows bacteria in it’s top layers to receive more oxygen and thus these bacteria can work better to break down nitrites.
