Gorgonians are an interesting addition to any reef tank. With a uniquely tall vertical profile, and a tree like shape they add a natural appearance to the reef tank. Most require reef tank quality lighting. Common colors are yellow, red, brown, & purple. The didiogorgonians are very popular and come in yellow or red and require no special lighting.

General:  As a general rule good circulation is needed before gorgonians will extend their polyps to absorb light and feed. Putty like reef aquarium epoxy can be used to attach them to rocks.

Additives: Use additives regularly. They should contain at least strontium, calcium, and iodine.

Circulation: Provide moderate to strong circulation, so branches move slightly. In nature these colonial animal’s branches are often in constant motion bent back and forth by moderate to strong currents.

Lighting: Most are photosynthetic so the equivalent of four to six watts of VHO lighting per gallon (or stronger) should be provided.

Food: Feed small amounts of coral food or live plankton. Use a turkey baster. Feed once a week or less.

Placement: Cement to rock with reef epoxy sticks or super glue gel. They are not very aggressive but might be stung by other corals if placed too close to them.

Diodogorgia are a common and beautiful gorgonian. They come in red or yellow. With good circulation they will extend white polyps during feeding or at night. These attractive gorgonians come from fairly deep water in Florida and the Caribbean and require no special lighting. This is one of our favorite gorgonians.
